My Favorite Autumn Board Books for Babies and Toddlers
You are your child’s first, best, and most important teacher. Reading to an infant or toddler is not a cute extra. It is how you wire language, attention, and belonging into a brain that is still building itself.
A baby does not need to “understand the story.” They need your voice, your lap, the rhythm of pages, and the back-and-forth of “look” and “there.” Shared reading from the first year is tied to stronger expressive and receptive language, and the earlier and longer it happens, the larger the effect. Minutes a day at ages 1–2 still show up years later in reading, spelling, grammar, and even numeracy.
It is also relationship work. Print books, held together, invite serve-and-return talk that screens do not. Conversation during reading matters more than a parent monologue. The American Academy of Pediatrics now treats shared reading from birth as part of healthy development, language, cognition, and the safe attachment that makes later learning possible.

Go to Sleep, Little Farm by Mary Lyn Ray is a beautiful and dreamy story where you and your child can say goodnight to everyone in and around a picture perfect little farm. The story gently lulls your child to sleep and gives tons of opportunities to introduce new vocabulary.
Little Pony from the Look at Me book series is an out of print treasure that is wonderful if you can get your hands on it. Children love that the books are in the shapes of their favorite animals. Parents love that the text is surprisingly rich and that the illustrations from Laura Rigo are detailed and beautiful. You should be on the lookout for all of the books in this series.
The publisher for Little Red Barn thought of everything when designing for little baby and toddler hands. The book is the perfect size, shaped with nice little bumps for baby to hold, and is a rare lift that flap that is actually STURDY! Pefect for exploring farm vocabulary.

Little Owl's Night is one of those special books that I memorized after hundreds of read alouds from my little ones - and honestly didn't mind one bit, because Little Owl is just such a cuties. Little Owl explores the world at night in a gentle way that isn't the least bit scary for the youngest listeners.
Owl Babies is the SWEETEST book about three baby owl siblings; Sarah, Percy, and Bill. They're waiting for their owl mother to come home while comforting one another. I love these sweet baby owls so much. This was a special book for my three little ones to read - and they still call their siblings Sarah and Percy and Bill. This is one of those board books we still pull out to read even though we are years past that stage! It's that good.
Goodnight Moon is an absolute classic. Need I say more? This has been a nursery favorite since the 1970s.
Gerda Muller's seasonal board books are my all time favorite books for babies and toddlers. Autumn is absolute perfection. Why do I love them? The illustrations are gorgeous and show real children doing real things. They wordless and allow open discussion for parents and children. This is the perfect book to have a different experience everytime. There is so much to explore. The whole series is easily worth the investment.
We're Going on a Bear Hunt is a delightful poem/song that children adore. Don't be afraid to get up and moving with this one! The beautiful illustrations in this board book edition just add to the fun.
There are plenty of versions of Five Little Pumpkins, but this sweet, gentle version provided in a padded board book edition is my all time favorite. There is something about Ben Mantle's illustrations that are particularly enchanting and absolutely glow during the night scenes. My babies and toddlers were always delighted by this read aloud. Tip: dramatically whisper during the "out goes the light" page for added fun!
