How can Little Bear grow with my child?

When I was a little girl, I grew up watching the sweet, gentle Little Bear cartoon. It followed a cute brown bear cub, his loving mother, his father, and his friends in the forest. It was pure coziness, and I absolutely adored it.

Years later, when I was pregnant with my first baby, I was browsing the children’s section at one of my favorite bookstores and spotted the Little Bear books. I had no idea the TV show was based on these early reader books by Else Holmelund Minarik with beautiful illustrations by Maurice Sendak. The memories came flooding back instantly.

At the time I was a classroom teacher, so I already knew how important it is to build a home library. I’d committed to reading to my baby from day one, so even though I knew it would be years before he could read them himself, I bought the books anyway.

To my happy surprise, when I sat down at home and read through them, they were nothing like the boring, repetitive early readers I was used to. These stories were genuinely charming! The soft, engaging illustrations and gentle adventures made them a joy to read aloud, even for me.

I started sharing the Little Bear stories with my baby right away, and we kept reading them all through toddlerhood. The simple, cozy tales were perfect for snuggling and bedtime.

Later, once my son finished learning to read with phonics, we brought Little Bear back out, this time for him to read on his own. The short chapters were just the right length to build his confidence, and the stories were rich enough that reading actually felt meaningful and fun.

That’s what I love most about the Little Bear series: it truly grows with your child. It was an easy selection for the American Pioneer Level 1 Booklist.

It’s a beautiful, gentle delight that can stay on your shelf for years.
